Muncie, Ind. - - Ball State junior libero Amanda McCormick (Muncie, Ind./Burris H.S.) has been recognized as the Mid-American Conference West Division Volleyball Player of the Week, as announced today by the league office. McCormick, who picks up the award for the first time in her career, earns the honor after helping guide the Cardinals to wins at Akron and Toledo last weekend. With the wins, Ball State secured one of four first-round byes for the 2005 MAC Tournament (Nov. 18-20) at the SeaGate Center in Toledo, Ohio.
In Saturday's three-game sweep at Toledo, McCormick not only posted a career-high digs total, but her 37 digs were the most in a three-game set in the nation so far this season and tie as the third-most in a three-game match in NCAA history. The 5-8 transfer from Nebraska started the evening strong, posting 16 digs in the opening set. After notching eight digs in game two, McCormick followed with 13 in the third frame.
In addition to her career-high digs total, McCormick tallied three assists and a service ace versus the Rockets.
In the Cardinals' five-game thriller at Akron Friday, McCormick tied a then career-high with 35 digs. She posted 10 digs in the first and third games, while scoring seven in the second and four in the fourth and fifth frames. McCormick also scored a service ace versus the Zips.
McCormick finished the week with 72 digs in nine games for an even 9.00 digs-per-game average. She raised her MAC-leading DPG average from 5.95 to 6.22. In addition, her 6.22 DPG average currently ranks fourth in the nation.
