Women's Volleyball Extends Winning Streak to Six at Akron

Akron, Ohio - - The Ball State (16-8; 9-4 Mid-American Conference) women's volleyball team extended its winning streak to six matches with a 3-2 (28-30, 37-35, 30-22, 22-30, 15-13) victory over Akron (9-17; 4-10 MAC) Friday evening at Rhodes Arena.
In the victory, sophomore middle attacker
Senior middle attacker Rachel Refenes (Milwaukee, Wis./Milwaukee Heights H.S.) paced all players in the match with 22 kills and eight total blocks. She also logged four digs, a service ace and an assist.
Junior libero Amanda McCormick (Muncie, Ind./Burris H.S.) upped her MAC-leading digs-per-game average to 6.01, after tying a career-high with 35 digs. She also scored a service ace.
Sophomore setter Angie Parrell (Black Earth, Wis./Wisconsin Heights H.S.) logged a career-best 69 assists, helping guide the Cardinals to a 78-to-64 advantage for total kills. She also paced Ball State with three service aces while adding nine digs, two blocks and a kill.
Senior outside attacker Sarah Obras (Pendleton, Ind./Pendleton Heights H.S.) continued her assault on the MAC's career kills record, posting 12 on the night and upping her career total to 1,875. Obras needs just 33 kills to break the record of 1,907. In addition, she collected 22 digs and now has 1,575 in her career.
Junior outside attacker Kelly Cochran (La Porte, Ind./Michigan City Marquette H.S.) netted 18 kills in the win. She also scored nine digs and a pair of blocks.
Senior opposite side attacker Kirby Gibson (Lafayette, Ind./Jefferson H.S.) added nine kills, a .471 attack percentage and two blocks, while senior middle attacker Kristin Westhof (Fruitport, Mich./Fruitport H.S.) tallied three kills, a block and a dig.
Also aiding in the Cardinals' win were senior defensive specialist Stephanie Bacan (Remsen, Iowa/St. Mary's H.S.) with 14 digs; junior outside attacker Heather Burleson (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian H.S.) with three digs, a kill and a block and freshman setter Lanee Mikesell (St. Henry, Ohio/St. Henry H.S.) with a pair of assists and a dig.
Jennifer Stewart paced four Zips with double-figure kills, recording 19. Kim Horn led five Akron players with double-digit digs, with 23.
In the win, the Cardinals held a .164 (78-42-220) to .126 (64-36-222) hitting advantage, while collecting 100 digs to the Zips 86. Akron won the battle at the net with 19 total blocks to BSU's 12.5. The Zips also held a 7-to-5 edge in service aces.
