November 18, 2005 | Softball
Elizabeth Milian (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc H.S.) and Amber Wolf (Indianapolis, Ind./Scecina Memorial H.S.) have signed national letters of intent to attend Ball State University and compete on the softball team, according to Cardinals head coach Terri Laux.
A three-year letterwinner who serves primarily as a pitcher, Milian has garnered back-to-back-to-back first-team all conference, all-district and all-region accolades. In addition, she received honorable mention on the all-state team last spring, when she served as captain of her team. A three-time team Most Valuable Player, she was honored as the 2005 Softball Player of the Year and the 2003 Softball Rookie of the Year. Milian helped her ASA Kalamazoo Klash team to a 17th-place finish at the 2004 national tournament and has made a total of seven national tournament appearances. She currently plays for the Illinois Chill.
A six-time recipient of an Academic Excellence award, Milian boasts a perfect 4.0 grade-point average on her school's 4.0 scale. She currently ranks No. 1 out of 598 students in her class. She will receive a Presidential Scholarship at Ball State, where she plans to major in actuarial science. The daughter of Ted and Sarah Milian, Elizabeth's sister, Rebekah, plays softball at Michigan and was a member of the Wolverines' 2005 national championship team.
"Elizabeth will provide us with a great presence on the mound and offer some punch on the offensive side as well," Laux says. "She is a tireless worker and understands the concept of what it takes to play at the Division I level."
A three-year letter who plays primarily behind the plate, Wolf tallied a .450 batting average with six home runs and 33 RBI last spring to help Scecina to a 20-6 overall record , a trip to the regional championship and a fourth-place ranking in the final ICGSA Class 2A state poll. Wolf was a preseason all-state selection and earned all-city accolades. Her team's Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year, she was named to the Indy Star All-East Team. Wolf plays for the ASA Indy Edge, which she has helped to five state championships, the 2003 NSA Super World Series Championship and a second-place finish at the Colorado Independence Day Tournament.
The daughter of John and Salli Wolf, Amber owns a 3.1 GPA and is a member of her school's High Honor Roll. She plans to major in special education at Ball State.
"Amber is the big hitter we're looking for. She has power at the plate and her work ethic will help her have a successful career here. She will be a great addition to the catching staff and will also be able to help us at the corners.
"We are very excited to have the caliber of players such as Elizabeth and Amber sign with us for next year. They both are excellent students, outstanding athletes and have the ability to contribute right away as freshmen. Their work ethic and commitment to both the classroom and the softball field are what we build our program with."
