Women's Volleyball Scores 3-0 Win at Kent State

Kent, Ohio - - Paced by a match-high 15 kills from senior Rachel Refenes (Milwaukee, Wis./Milwaukee Lutheran H.S.), the Ball State (10-6; Mid-American Conference) women's volleyball team scored a 3-0 (30-16, 30-28, 30-20) victory at Kent State (6-11; 2-4 MAC) Saturday evening at the MAC Center in Kent, Ohio.

In the second game, Kent State built an early seven-point advantage and maintained it until the 20-13 mark. Refenes followed with a kill which sparked a 12-5 BSU run which tied the frame at 25. After Kent State's second time out, BSU would score the next four points on three KSU errors and a Refenes kill to reach game point at 29-25. The Golden Flashes would push the score to 29-28 before a Parrell quick attack gave Ball State the game at 30-28.
The third set would see the teams play to a 15-15 tie before the Cardinals went on a five-point run to climb ahead 20-15. The spread would remain five points at the 25-20 mark, before BSU posted the final five markers of the match on three kills from Refenes - - including the match winner - - one from junior Kelly Cochran (LaPorte, Ind./Michigan City Marquette H.S.) and a KSU set error.
Cochran finished the match with nine kills, while May and senior Sarah Obras (Pendleton, Ind./Pendleton Heights H.S.) each tallied seven. Cochran would go on to collect six digs and a block, while May tallied three digs and two blocks and Obras earned 10 digs and a service ace.
Parrell would finish the contest with a match-best four total blocks, along with a match-high 37 assists. She also scored four kills and four digs.
Also helping out the BSU offense was junior Heather Burleson (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian H.S.), who scored five kills and two blocks in the win.
Defensively, junior Amanda McCormick (Muncie, Ind./Burris H.S.) would record a match-best 16 digs, while adding a service ace and an assists. Senior Stephanie Bacan (Remsen, Iowa/St. Mary's H.S.) added six digs, an ace and an assist in the victory.
For the game, Ball State limited the Golden Flashes to a .079 (37-27-126) hitting percentage, while posting a .270 (47-17-111) mark. BSU also held the advantage in digs (49 to 39) and blocks (8 to 4). Each club recorded three service aces.
Danielle Holt paced the Golden Flashes with 13 kills, while Laura Jensen recorded a team-high 14 digs.
The Ball State women's volleyball team will return to action next Friday, when it travels to Kalamazoo, Mich., to face the Western Michigan Broncos at 7 p.m. (6 p.m. Muncie Time).
