Women's Volleyball Suffers 0-3 Setback at No. 24 Ohio

Athens, Ohio - - The Ball State (9-6; 3-2 Mid-American Conference) women's volleyball team suffered a 0-3 (26-30, 23-30, 23-30) setback at No. 24 Ohio (15-2; 5-0 MAC) Friday evening at the Convocation Center in Athens, Ohio.
Senior Rachel Refenes (Milwaukee, Wis./Milwaukee Lutheran H.S.) and junior Kelly Cochran (LaPorte, Ind./Michigan City Marquette H.S.) each recorded double-figure kills for the Cardinals with 16 and 12, respectively. Cochran added 13 digs in the contest for her 11th double-double of the season.
Sophomore
In the opening set, the Bobcats pulled out to an early 13-10 advantage, only to have the Cardinals fight back and tie the game at 16 on a kill from Refenes. After a pair of Ohio attack errors gave the Cardinals an 18-16 advantage, OU would tally 12 of the next 17 points to pull ahead 27-23. BSU would draw back within a pair on kills from senior Sarah Obras (Pendleton, Ind./Pendleton Heights H.S.) and Refenes at 28-26, before Ohio closed the game at 30-26 with back-to-back kills.
The Cardinals and the Bobcats would play to a 9-9 tie in the second set, before a 9-4 Ohio run pushed the score to 18-13. Ball State would answer with kills from May and Obras, cutting the gap to 18-15, only to have Ohio score four-straight points to move ahead 22-15. The Cardinals would get no closer than five points the rest of the game, dropping the stanza 30-23.
Ohio would once again take an early lead in the third game, only to have Ball State answer and eventually pull ahead 14-13 on a kill from sophomore Angie Parrell (Black Earth, Wis./Wisconsin Heights H.S.) and three-straight Ohio errors. After pushing the game to the 16-16 mark, Ohio would score 14 of the final 21 points to win the game 30-23.
Obras and Parrell would each finish the contest with eight kills, while Kirby Gibson (Lafayette, Ind./Jefferson H.S.) collected one. Obras would also add three blocks, four digs and four assists, while Parrell scored 41 assists, four digs and two blocks.
Defensively, junior Amanda McCormick (Muncie, Ind./Burris H.S.) paced all players with 21 digs in the match, while senior Stephanie Bacan (Remsen, Iowa/St. Mary's H.S.) collected seven.
Also playing in the match for the Cardinals were sophomore Heather Burleson (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian H.S.) and senior Kristin Westhof (Fruitport, Mich./Fruitport H.S.).
For the match, the Cardinals hit .281 (54-16-135) compared to a .333 (61-15-138) clip for the Bobcats. Ohio also held the advantage in digs (55 to 50), blocks (6 to 5) and service aces (4 to 0).
Four players collected double-figure kills for the Bobcats, paced by 14 apiece from Melissa Griffin and Holly Schetzsle. Savanah Parra led the Bobcats with 11 digs.
The Ball State women's volleyball team will return to the court Saturday, when it travels to Kent State to face the Golden Flashes Saturday at 7 p.m. (6 P.M. Muncie Time).
