Muncie, Ind. - - For the first time this season and the first time in her career, Ball State women's volleyball senior outside attacker Sarah Obras (Pendleton, Ind./Pendleton Heights H.S.) has been named Mid-American Conference Scholar Athlete of the Week.
Obras, an accounting major with a 3.86 grade-point average, picks up the award after helping guide the Cardinals to a 3-1 victory over MAC West Division-leader Eastern Michigan last Saturday. In the contest, Obras became the school's all-time career kills leader as well as the MAC's career attempts leader and the first player in league history to record over 1,500 kills and 1,500 digs in a career.
Obras entered the contest versus the Eagles 10 kills shy of the school record (1,827) set by Megan Hammons (1998-2001). She collected her school-record 1,828th kill with a tip just past the EMU block, giving the Cardinals a 28-18 advantage in the second set. Obras finished the evening with 18 kills, moving her career total to 1,835.
In addition to the kills mark, Obras became the first player in league history to post over 1,500 kills and 1,500 digs in a career midway through the first set. She finished the match with 11 digs - - marking her 10th double-double of the season - - and moved her career total to 1,508.
Obras reached another milestone with her first swing in the second frame and 11th of the night, becoming the league's all-time career attempts leader. She finished the contest with 48 attempts, moving her career total to 5,274.
Obras also logged a pair of solo blocks, a service ace and an assist, while compiling a .250 (18-6-48) attack percentage in the contest.
After Tuesday's victory at Xavier, Obras moved within 60 kills of the all-time MAC record set by Northern Illinois' Tera Lobdell at 1,907. Obras enters the weekend with 1,847 career kills, 1,521 career digs and 5,311 career attempts.
