Rachel Refenes Collects Second MAC Volleyball Player of the Week Honor

Muncie, Ind. - - For the second time this season and third time in her career, Ball State senior Rachel Refenes (Milwaukee, Wis./Milwaukee Lutheran H.S.) has been recognized as the Mid-American Conference West Division Volleyball Player of the Week. Refenes earns the honor after helping guide the Cardinals to a pair of wins over Central Michigan and MAC West Division-leader Eastern Michigan last weekend.
In the Cardinals' match vs. the Chippewas Friday, the 6-3 middle attacker pounded a match-high 15 kills on 28 swings for a .429 (15-3-28) rate of success. She also collected five total blocks - - moving her career total to 501 - - and logged four digs, a pair of service aces and an assist.
In Saturday's victory over Eastern Michigan, Refenes tied a season-high and once again paced all players with 24 kills plus added a match-best .419 (24-6-43) attack percentage. She also collected eight total blocks (three solo and five assists) in the contest.
With the Cardinals trailing 12-10 in the fourth game vs. EMU, Refenes changed the momentum of the game with a solo stuff, then combined with setter Angie Parrell (Black Earth, Wis./Wisconsin Heights H.S.) to collect three block assists and a kill to put the Cardinals ahead for good at 15-12. She also scored a pair of digs, a pair of assists and a service ace vs. the Eagles.
For the week, Refenes averaged 5.57 kills per game and 1.83 blocks per contest, while hitting an impressive .423 (39-9-71). She also posted 0.86 digs per game, 0.43 aces per game and 0.43 assists per game, while helping limit CMU and EMU to a combined .109 (90-55-295) attack percentage.
The Ball State women's volleyball team will look to extend its current winning streak to three matches Tuesday, when it heads to Cincinnati, Ohio, to take on the Xavier Musketeers at 7 p.m. (6 p.m. Muncie Time). The match will be carried live on WCRD 91.3 FM by the broadcast crew of Alex Graessle and Peter Heinz.
The Cardinals close the home portion of its MAC schedule this weekend when it hosts Northern Illinois Friday and Western Michigan Saturday. For Friday's contest, the Delta High School Pep Band will provide the musical entertainment, while Saturday's contest marks senior night for the Cardinals.
Saturday's contest will also be a "Volleyball Free For All", with free admission for EVERYONE. In addition, prizes will be given out throughout the match, capped by the give-away of a Color TV, an X-Box donated by Pepsi and a collection of X-Box games including Tiger Woods 2006 and Madden 2006.
