Women's Volleyball Dips the Chippewas, 3-0

Muncie, Ind. - - The Ball State (11-8; 5-4 Mid-American Conference) women's volleyball team hit a season-high .313 (45-14-99) to dip the Central Michigan Chippewas (3-16; 0-9 MAC) by a score of 3-0 (30-17, 30-24, 30-20) Friday evening at Worthen Arena.
Senior middle attacker Rachel Refenes (Milwaukee, Wis./Milwaukee Lutheran H.S.) paced all players with 15 kills in the match, while recording five total blocks to bring her career total to 501. The 6-3 senior also collected four digs and a pair of service aces, while hitting at a .429 (
Junior outside attacker Kelly Cochran (La Porte, Ind./Michigan City Marquette H.S.) also tallied double-figure kills in the match, collecting 14. Cochran hit for a season-best .400 (
In the opening set, the teams battled to a 6-6 tie before BSU's Amanda McCormick (Muncie, Ind./Burris H.S.) went back to serve. McCormick would end up serving the next 15 points, giving the Cardinals a 20-7 lead. CMU would cut the BSU advantage to 10 points at 27-17, but a pair of kills and a solo stuff from Cochran ended the game at 30-17.
In the second set, the Cardinals jumped ahead 5-2 and held a five point advantage at the 17-12 mark. However, a Chippewas timeout would spark an 8-0 run from the visitors, giving them a 20-17 advantage. A pair of kills from sophomore
After the Cardinals scored the first three points in the third set, CMU would battle back, taking an 8-7 lead. BSU would regain its edge at 10-9 on a Cochran kill and never trail again. With Ball State ahead by five points at 15-10, CMU would make its final effort of the night to keep in the game, drawing within two points at 17-15, only to have the Cardinals score 13 of the final 18 points. Cochran capped the match with a pair of service aces, pushing the score to 30-20.
In addition to her strong service run in the opening frame, McCormick finished the contest with a match-high 17 digs. She also added a service ace and an assists.
May collected eight kills in the match, while pacing all players with a .583 (
Westhof turned in three kills and two blocks in the match, while Parrell tallied 35 assists, five digs, two kills, a pair of service aces and a block.
Junior Heather Burleson (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian H.S.) tagged three kills in the contest, while collecting 10 digs and three blocks. She also logged a service ace and an assists.
Also helping guide the Cardinals to victory was senior Stephanie Bacan (Remsen, Iowa/St. Mary's H.S.) with three digs.
For the match, the Cardinals held a .313 to .070 (34-26-115) advantage in hitting, while tallying 10 blocks to CMU's six. BSU also held a 10-6 edge in service aces and a 46-34 lead in digs.
Alison Baker paced the Chippewas with nine kills, while Ali McCrite scored a team-best 11 digs.
The Ball State women's volleyball team will return to action Saturday, when it host MAC West Division leader Eastern Michigan (15-5; 8-1 MAC) at
