MUNCIE, Ind. - - Jay Broughton (Fairland, Ind./Triton Central H.S.) and Alex Schmid (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic H.S.) have signed national letters of intent to attend Ball State University and compete on the baseball team, according to BSU head coach Greg Beals.
Broughton enters his senior season at Triton Central H.S. as one of the top pitchers in Mid-Hoosier Conference. A three-year letterwinner for Coach Rob Robertson, Broughton has an 18-5 career record and five saves. Over 140 innings of work, he has compiled a 1.45 ERA with 254 strikeouts while walking just 49 batters. At the plate, Broughton has a .364 career batting average with 12 home runs and 54 RBI.
Last season, Broughton compiled an 8-2 overall record with two saves and a 1.23 ERA. He struck out 112 batters while allowing just 23 walks over 57 innings. In addition to his high school playing experience, Broughton plays summer baseball for Roundtripper’s Indiana Mustangs.
"We are excited about Jay becoming a Cardinal," said Beals. "He has the potential to become very special during his time here at Ball State. He possesses a fastball up to 90mph and a big time curveball. Jay will make an immediate impact on our pitching staff."
Schmid enters his senior season at Canton Central Catholic H.S. after helping guide the team to the regionals last season. After starting at third base as a freshman, Schmid has performed as the starting catcher for Coach Doug Miller for the past two seasons. A career .442 (123 for 278) batter, Schmid has compiled 108 RBI, 78 runs scored 34 doubles, three triples and six home runs over his three-year career.
An All-Ohio honorable mention his junior season, Schmid has helped guide Canton Central Catholic to a 72-18 record over the past three seasons, including a Division II State Runner-up finish his sophomore campaign. Last season, Schmid hit .500 with 11 doubles, one triple, one home run, 36 runs scored and 36 RBI.
"I am excited and feel fortunate to have Alex join our program," said Beals. "He is a true student-athlete. He is a left-handed hitting catcher with solid defensive skills and a bat with power potential."
