Dobbs was a four-year letterman in basketball for Ball State from 1953 to 1957, setting school records with 1,210 points career points, 458 points in one season, 39 points in a game, and 239 rebounds in a single campaign.

After leading Indianapolis Arlington’s baseball team to the runner-up spot in the first state baseball tournament in 1967, Dobbs served as an assistant basketball coach at BSU between 1968 and 1977.
