Nelson, a two-time All-Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association selection, lettered on the men’s volleyball team from 1975 through 1977 and was named a Rookie All-American in 1975. As a senior, Nelson helped the Cardinals to a 17-4-1 overall record and a second-place finish in the MIVA final standings after ranking second on the team with a .333 hitting percentage. He was selected a co-Most Valuable Player for the Cardinals that season. As a junior and sophomore, Nelson helped the Cardinals to records 21-2 and 19-3, respectively, plus back-to-back first-place ties in the MIVA. In his junior season, Nelson managed a .383 hitting percentage, which was the third-best single-season performance in school history at the time. After the completion of his freshman year at Ball State, Nelson was named to the U.S. Volleyball Association All-Rookie Team while playing for the Michiana Club. Nelson completed his playing career with a .386 hitting percentage, which ranked third in Ball State annals at the time.

After an outstanding four-year career at Ball State, Nelson spent a year with a variety of U.S. All-Star teams and was named to the starting lineup for a USA vs. Cuba match played at Ball State in October of 1977. Nelson also played in the 1977 World Championships and the 1977 World Cup. After completing his playing career, Nelson returned to assist BSU head men’s volleyball coach Don Shondell plus coached the North Team at the 1986 U.S. Olympic Festival.
