Gardner, a two-time letterman in both basketball and track for the Cardinals from 1938 to 1940, coached basketball at Westland, Rising Sun, and Batesville high schools plus track, baseball, and golf at Batesville prior to his death in 1977. A well-known official for both football and basketball on both the college and high school level, Gardner’s name is affixed to an award given annually to the outstanding high school official in Indiana.
