Chitwood, who twice earned Academic All-America recognition plus received All-America laurels as a senior, was a four-year letterwinner as a center on the BSU football team from 1980 through 1983. He tri-captained the Cardinals in 1983, and became Ball State’s first-ever Academic All-America First-Team selection. After the 1983-84 academic year he became one of only 25 senior collegiate football players from throughout the country to receive an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, plus was the recipient of a National Football Foundation Hall of Fame Postgraduate Scholarship. As a senior, in 1983, he also earned honorable mention on the Associated Press All-America Team. Chitwood was an Academic All-America Second-Team choice in 1982.

A 1984 graduate of Ball State, Chitwood earned his medical degree from Indiana University’s School of Medicine in 1988 and became a vascular surgery fellow at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Mich.
