A prolific scorer, John Lee's name continues to adorn the Ball State men's basketball record book long after his varsity playing career which ran from 1961-64. The sixth-ever member of the Cardinals' 1,000-point club, Lee finished with 1,134 points in just three varsity seasons. He led the Cardinals at 18.1 points per game as a sophomore in 1961-62, and his career scoring average of 17.4 points per game still ranks eighth in school history.

Lee set Ball State records for career field goal percentage (.518) and free throw percentage (.821) and still ranks among the top 10 in both. An All-Indiana Collegiate Conference First Team selection in 1964, Lee helped the Cardinals to the 1964 NCAA College Division Postseason tournament for the program's first postseason appearance at the NCAA level. The New Castle native was selected for induction into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 2019. He passed away in December 2019 at the age of 77.
