Diettrich, who lettered in football from 1983 to 1986, was a placekicker and punter for the Cardinals. Diettrich completed his career ranked ninth in NCAA history with 63 field goals, which set a Mid-American Conference record. In 1986, he was named to The Sporting News All-America Second Team, The Associated Press All-America Third Team and The Football News All-America Third Team. He was a two-time All-MAC selection after leading the nation in field goals and ranking 18^th in the country in scoring as a junior, and leading the MAC and tying for eighth in the country in field goals as a senior.
