Phend, who died at the age of 48 in 1967, was known as the “Goshen Ghost” during his football career at Ball State between 1937 and 1940, collecting all-state honors twice and leading the state’s collegiate scorers with 61 points during his sophomore campaign in 1938. The gridiron halfback also lettered three years for the Cardinal track squad as a sprinter.
Phend served as assistant football and basketball coach at Goshen High School for 20 years and was honored posthumously upon the naming of Goshen High School’s baseball stadium being named after him.
