Hathaway earned All-Indiana Collegiate Conference recognition three times in football at Ball State, helping the Cardinals to a 23-4-2 record, three ICC titles, and two Grantland Rice Bowl berths from 1965 to 1967. He was an all-league first-team linebacker as a sophomore and senior plus earned All-ICC honorable mention at fullback as a junior. He helped the 1965 BSU football team to a 9-0 regular season.
