Takats, a three-year regular on both Ball State’s football and baseball teams from 1937 to 1940, earned all-conference as a guard on the gridiron as a senior.

He coached Dugger High School football teams to a record of 29-7 from 1947-1950. Takats, a high school official in both baseball and football from 1952 to 1975, was named to the Indiana Football Hall of Fame in 1977 and served on that organization’s Board of Directors beginning in 1979.
