Chase captained Ball State’s first football team in 1924 and started at fullback for the school’s first three gridiron squads before being sidelined with a broken neck in 1926. One entire page in the 1927 Ball State yearbook, the Orient, was devoted to him, praising him for his “loyal, whole-hearted, dynamic spirit” and expressing sorrow that “he was called upon to sacrifice, yes, a far greater sacrifice than any of us can fully comprehend.”
