Kerr, an All-American in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track at Ball State from 1966 to 1969, was the national college division champion in the 1500-meter run in 1968. He placed seventh in the 1967 NCAA College Division Cross Country Championships, sparking the Cardinals to third place in the team standings. In 1969, Kerr placed fourth in the mile at the NCAA University Division Indoor Championships.
