Rathburn was a two-year letterman in both football and baseball at Ball State from 1936 to 1938, serving as co-captain of the 1937 Cardinal football team.

He coached football, basketball, and baseball at four schools – Liberty Township in Porter County, Lowell, Valparaiso, and Angola – over a 14-year period before serving as principal at Angola Elementary School for 26 years.Â
