Koeppen lettered for both Ball State’s cross country and track teams three seasons between 1965 and 1967, leading the Cardinal harriers to the NCAA college division championships three straight campaigns and setting several school distance records.

In nine years at Carmel High School, Koeppen had directed the cross country team to a 96-3 record and four state championships and the track team to a 73-2 mark.
