Hilton, a four-year track letterman between 1947 and 1950, established Ball State records of 9.7 seconds in the 100-yard dash and 21.2 seconds in the 220. His 220 mark remains the school standard yet today.

He was a highly successful head track coach between 1954 and 1967 at Richmond High School before becoming the Red Devils’ athletic director.
