Thompson was named to the 1989-90 All-NCAA West Regional team after leading the Cardinals to victories over Oregon State and Louisville, while helping the team advance to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16. Thompson tallied 15 points, six rebounds and two assists against Louisville in his first year at Ball State to advance the Cardinals to the furthest postseason in the school’s history at the time.
He was named the CBS Player of the Game against Louisville, and then against UNLV in the Sweet 16 after managing 21 points, nine rebounds and two assists vs. the Runnin’ Rebels.
In addition, Thompson was named to the NIT All-Star Team prior to his junior season and received honorable mention on the Blue Ribbon College Basketball All-America Team after averaging 15.4 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.
Thompson guided Ball State to preseason and postseason NIT appearances as a senior, and managed 19 double-figure scoring efforts.
He played in 96 games in his career with 91 starts, and became only the sixth player in Ball State history to both score 1,000 points plus tally 500 rebounds in a career. He completed his career ranked eighth at BSU in career scoring with 1,219 points, and ninth on the Ball State career rebounding charts with 534 boards.
