Straight compiled a record of 148 wins and 58 losses in eight years at Huntington High School and a career varsity mark of 247-106 that spanned 15 years at four schools. His 1963-64 Viking club posted a 27-2 mark and won sectional, regional, and semi-state titles before losing in the final game of the state tournament.

Straight lettered four years on the hardwood between 1946 and 1950 for the Cardinals. The1979 inductee into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame, principal of Huntington North since 1967, served as a member of the Indiana High School Athletic Association Board of Directors beginning in 1976 and became its president during the 1979-80 school year.
