Heady was a two-year monogram letter winner in both baseball and basketball for BSU in 1962 and 1963. As a senior in baseball, he posted a 5-0 pitching record and a 2.76 earned run average plus batted .417.

Over 16 years as head basketball coach at Griffith, Wawasee, and Shenandoah high schools, heady owned an accumulative record of 119 wins and 59 losses. He led Shenandoah to a 26-3 record and into the Final Four of the Indiana High School Athletic Association basketball tourney in 1980-81.
