Harless, a four-year tennis letterman at Ball State from 1958 to 1961 who won four Indiana Collegiate Conference championships, had been a ranked tennis player in Indiana for over 25 years. He held the number one ranking in Indiana in the 45-and-older men’s singles division. In addition to winning the 1980 National Clay Court 45-and-older singles title, Harless won seven state championships.
