Thomas, who accumulated eight letters in three sports for Ball State, owns the school records for both career and single-season pins in wrestling. From 1959 to 1962, he accumulated a 50-14-1 record with 35 pins and won the ICC heavyweight title twice.

The three-year offensive line regular for the Cardinal football team was chosen both captain and MVP in 1962. Thomas also lettered twice in track.
