Gooden, a four-year member of the Ball State University men’s basketball team, played a key role in the Cardinals’ first-ever Mid-American Conference Tournament Championship and the school’s first-ever berth in the NCAA Division I Tournament in 1981. Gooden, who earned three varsity letters and started the final 46 games of his collegiate career, was a two-time All-MAC second-team selection. The 6-foot-5 forward still holds Ball State’s school records for best field-goal percentage in two seasons (.585 300 of 513, 1979-81) and in a career (.580 317 of 547, 1977-81). He was named the league’s Player of the Week twice in his career plus was selected Ball State’s Most Improved Player as a junior.
