1989-90 Men's Basketball Team

The 1989-90 men’s basketball team completed the season with a 26-7 overall record and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16. The Cardinals won the MAC Championship and the MAC Tournament before defeating Oregon State and Louisville in the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament. Ball State ended its magical season with a 69-67 loss to eventual national champion UNLV. Ball State ended the season ranked 22nd in the nation in the final USA Today Poll, which stands as the highest final season ranking in school history. Led by nine seniors, the 1989-90 team followed up a 1988-89 season that saw the Cardinals compile a 29-3 overall record and win the first NCAA Tournament game in Ball State history when it defeated Pittsburgh in the first round. Ball State’s 1989-90 team consisted of Dave Barber, Billy Butts, Emanuel Cross, Mike Giunta, Mark Hardwick, Rodney Haynes, Curtis Kidd, Paris McCurdy, Greg Miller, Roman Muller, Scott Nichols, Shawn Parrish, Mike Spicer, Keith Stalling, and Chandler Thompson. The team was coached by head coach Dick Hunsaker and assistant coaches Larry Eustachy, Ron Hecklinski, Vince Bertram, and the late Leonard Drake.
