Howard, who lettered in baseball and football at Ball State from 1983 to 1986, was a member of the Cincinnati Reds. He was a 1986 All-American First-Team selection by Converse/American Baseball Coaches Association, Baseball America and The Sporting News. Howard was the 1986 Mid-American Conference Player of the Year plus was a two-time All-MAC and all-district choice. Howard originally was the only Ball State athlete ever selected in the first round of a professional draft when the San Diego Padres selected him in the first round of the 1986 Major League Baseball Draft.
