In May of 2019, the Ball State University Board of Trustees announced the approval of a $15 million indoor practice facility for athletics.
Flash forward to April of 2021 when the Ball State football team opened spring camp inside the new multipurpose complex
Serving as critical practice space for football, softball, baseball, and soccer during inclement weather, it made an immediate impact on the competitive experience of Ball State’s student-athletes.
The indoor space also provides additional opportunities for the entire campus and broader community, including the Pride of Mid-America Marching Band.
The facility was named the Scheumann Family Indoor Practice Facility in honor of June and the late John Scheumann, ’71, who made the lead gift. The field inside the practice facility is named Briner Field to honor Peggy and Kenneth Briner, ’69. The field within Scheumann Stadium is now called Gainbridge Field to recognize the donation from company executive Daniel Towriss, ’94, and his wife, Heather.
Overall, the 84,000 square-foot facility features a field-turf surface measuring 360’ x 160’ and regulation-sized competition field with a ceiling height of 65’. Retractable netting, batting cages, and storage provide the necessary amenities for teams to conduct training. The facility is conveniently located adjacent to the Fisher Training Complex on the footprint of the previous grass practice fields.
