Namesake:
John Lewellen, a track star at Ball State between 1935 and 1937. Lewellen was a member of Ball State's staff from 1937 to 1970. He served as tennis coach for one year, cross country coach for two campaigns, golf coach for 19 seasons, swimming coach for 24 years, assistant football coach for 10 seasons, head of the men’s physical education department for five years, and director of aquatics, a position he held at the start of 1970.

Home to the men's and women's swimming and diving teams, Lewellen Aquatic Center is a 25-yard, 6 lane pool with a diving well and one meter board. Along with athletics, the facility is also used for classes and recreation.
