Baseball Bats Heat Up in Doubleheader Sweep over WCU
March 09, 2018 | Baseball
CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Ball State baseball team exploded for 27 runs in a doubleheader sweep at Western Carolina Friday afternoon. The Cardinals won game one by a count of 7-4 and then took the second game, 20-8.
Senior outfielder Jeff Riedel tied an NCAA Division I record in the second game with five doubles. The native of Cookeville, Tennessee, tied the national mark with a two-run double in the top of the seventh inning. He is the seventh Division I player to register five doubles and the first since Western Carolina's Aaron Attaway in a 2012 game against Iona. Riedel finished the game 5-for-6 with six RBIs and three runs scored.
Fellow senior Seth Freed also had a big day at the plate in game two. The infielder notched a pair of home runs, a three-run shot in the third inning and a two-run long ball in the seventh, and equaled his personal high with five RBIs.
Sophomore Noah Powell, batting in the number nine spot in the nightcap, equaled a Ball State record with five runs scored. The shortstop is the 14th Cardinal to score five times in a game and the first to do so since Alex Maloney accomplished the feat in 2016 versus Western Michigan.
Ball State's 20 runs and 16 hits were both season highs.
In the first game, sophomore righty John Baker pitched a seven-inning complete game. Baker struck out six batters and scattered seven hits. This was his first collegiate complete game.
Juniors William Baker and Zach Milam combined for four hits and four RBIs in the opener. Ball State never trailed in game one as the Cardinals tallied single runs in the first and third innings, followed by a two-spot in the top of the fourth, to jump out to a 4-0 lead.
The Cardinals (7-7) will go for the three-game sweep over Western Carolina (1-13) tomorrow, March 10, with first pitch slated for 2 p.m.
