Women's Basketball Returns To Its Winning Ways With 86-61 Victory Over Miami

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's basketball team returned to its winning ways after its 86-61 Mid-American Conference victory over Miami Wednesday night in Worthen Arena. With the win, the Cardinals improved to 12-1 on the season and 1-1 in conference action while the RedHawks fall to 9-4 on the year and 1-1 in league play.
Senior forward Moriah Monaco led all players with a 20-point performance, marking her 66th time she has reached double figures for her career. Both junior guard Jasmin Samz and senior forward Destiny Washington chipped in 16 points apiece while teammate junior guard Carmen Grande ended the night with 15 points and seven assists.
For the game, Ball State outscored Miami 44-to-20 in the paint and scored 24 points off of the RedHawks' 26 miscues.
Ball State came out strong to start the game, scoring 10 unanswered points in the first four minutes of play. By the 2:53 mark Ball State's defense had held Miami to only four points. The Cardinals shot 56.3 percent (9-of-16) from the floor in the first quarter to take a 22-11 advantage over Miami heading into the second frame.
Miami opened the second quarter with a 7-5 run to cut Ball State's lead to nine (27-18) at the 7:15 mark but Monaco and Grande hit back-to-back 3-point baskets to put the Cardinals back up by 15 (33-18) with just under five minutes remaining. Ball State again scored 22 points in the second quarter and took a 44-29 lead over Miami at the half. Three players had already reached double figures for the Cardinals at intermission which were led by Grande with 13, Washington had 12 and Monaco finished the first half with 10.
The Cardinals were challenged defensively in the third quarter as they allowed the RedHawks to cut their 20-point lead in half to just 53-43 with 2:56 on the clock. Monaco answered with a fast break layup off of the assist from Washington to stop the RedHawks' momentum. Junior guard Nakeya Penny and free throws from Washington and Monaco helped push Ball State's lead to 63-45 to close the quarter.
Ball State closed out strong, taking its largest lead of the game 86-54 with 1:52 left to play. The Cardinals snapped the RedHawks seven-game win streak with tonight's victory. Under the direction of Brady Sallee, the Cardinals are 7-0 against Miami from 2013-present.
After eight straight home games, the Cardinals will travel for the first time since Nov. 22 when it heads to Bowling Green in Mid-American Conference action Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip-off in the Stroh Center.
