Late Goal Lifts Baylor over Cardinals, 1-0
September 03, 2017 | Soccer
Alyssa Heintschel makes six saves as BSU hangs with another Big 12 team
WACO, Texas -- The Ball State soccer team has certainly challenged itself during the non-conference portion of the schedule, and Sunday was no different.
The Cardinals played another Big 12 Conference opponent and kept the score even through 77 minutes before Baylor broke through for a 1-0 victory at Betty Lou Mays Field.
The Cardinals (1-4-1), which played two days earlier at TCU, dropped their second one-goal decision of the weekend as they faced their third power conference opponent of the year. Baylor (4-0-1) remained unbeaten on the season.
"The feeling in our camp is very optimistic, and we feel very excited about the future," Ball State coach Craig Roberts said. "We knew the teams we played this weekend were quality teams, but wanted to test ourselves, regardless of the outcome."
Baylor's attack was stymied most of the afternoon by a Ball State defense that wouldn't break and a strong performance from goalkeeper Alyssa Heintschel. But Jackie Crowther found a sliver of an opening in the 78th minute and converted for the day's only goal.
Heintschel made six saves on the day, including four in the first half alone. A pair of diving stops, including a great recovery after Baylor nearly had a look at an open net, kept the game scoreless heading into the second half.
"We battled very well," Roberts said. "We made major progress again from the last game. It was a much physically stronger performance in matching a high-level team like Baylor."
Ball State's best chances for a goal came in the second half. Melissa Diceman played a ball off the bounce just over the crossbar while the game was still tied. And Evie Stepaniak found enough of an opening in the closing minutes to rip a shot from 25 yards out, but Baylor keeper Jennifer Wandt was there to make the stop.
Ball State will continue a three-game road stretch next weekend with a much shorter trip. The Cardinals will visit IUPUI for a 7 p.m. kickoff Friday. BSU will then return home to close out non-conference play Sept. 15 against Western Illinois.
