Soccer Rolls Past Ohio, 3-1

Julia Elbvo scores twice, Lauren Roll once in BSU victory
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Sophomore midfielder Julia Elvbo scored in the opening minutes of each half Friday, and the Ball State soccer team rolled to a 3-1 victory over Ohio at the Briner Sports Complex.
Junior mid Lauren Roll added the third goal as the Cardinals (4-5-2, 2-0-1 MAC) remained unbeaten in Mid-American Conference play. They handed the Bobcats (5-6-0, 2-1-0 MAC) their first league loss.
Ball State will be home again Sunday to host fellow MAC unbeaten Kent State at 2 p.m. The matchup of last year's MAC regular season and tournament champions will air on ESPN3, produced by Ball State Sports Link.
Elvbo started the scoring Friday in the fourth minute when she got on the end of a cross from Roll and drilled a header into the net. It was the earliest Ball State has scored this season.
The Cardinals' lead remained 1-0 until Elvbo struck with another header 62 seconds into the second half. This time she was on the end of a cross from freshman Nicky Potts.
"It was a good performance," Ball State coach Craig Roberts said. "Any time you win 3-1 at home is always positive. I still think this team has not even reached anywhere near its full potential. So to come away with a win like this is obviously exciting for everybody."
Ball State tacked on its third goal 11 minutes later to take a commanding lead. Allison Abbe flicked the ball to Roll, who took it in stride down the middle of the field and drilled a sliding shot past Ohio keeper Sydney Malham for a 3-0 lead.
Ohio eventually scored its only goal on a penalty kick after a foul on the Cardinals just inside the 18-yard box. Allie Curry converted to pull the Bobcats back within two goals, but Ball State kept Ohio from any real chances to get closer.
"I thought we were pretty consistent with what we needed to do," Roberts said. "I'm looking for this team to keep taking steps in the right direction. We're delighted with the positive corrections we've made. We still have a lot of room for improvement, but we're definitely headed in the right direction."
Outside of the penalty kick, senior goalkeeper Tristin Stuteville stopped the other shots on goal she faced. She came off her line to make several plays, especially early in the game, as the Cardinals fended off six Ohio corner kicks on the night.
Junior defender Taylor Pooley made a key play in the first half, hustling to keep a ball from trickling into the net after Stuteville had been pulled away from the goal. That play kept the Cardinals in front 1-0 headed to halftime.
Elvbo became the second BSU player to score two goals in a game this season, joining Sam Kambol in the final non-conference game. She now has three goals and an assist through three league contests. Roll scored for the second straight game, while Abbe provided an assist on two of Friday's goals.
