Soccer Sees Positives in 1-1 Draw with Appalachian State

Emily Scott’s 70th-minute goal helps Cardinals avoid rare home loss
MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State soccer team would have loved a victory, but head coach Craig Roberts characterized Sunday's 1-1 draw against Appalachian State as a positive result for numerous reasons.
First, there was the way his team fixed its mistakes coming off back-to-back losses for the first time in nearly a year. Second, there was the Cardinals' response after falling behind by a goal in the second half. And third, there was the freshness he sensed from his players competing on one day's rest against an Appalachian State team that had been off for a week.
"We got a lot out of this game," Roberts said. "The things we wanted to work on from the last game, I think we corrected. It was a much stronger performance. I was delighted with our overall commitment to what was going on. I felt we looked stronger at the end of the game."
Emily Scott scored the only goal for Ball State (1-2-1), beating Appalachian State keeper Taylor Ray from just inside the 18-yard box for the equalizer in the 70th minute. The 1-1 score stood through the remainder of regulation and both overtime periods.
But after the opening minutes of the game, the Cardinals' had a real advantage in terms of scoring opportunities. Lauren Lerew saw a long-range strike glance off the crossbar late in the first half, while Julia Elvbo nearly gave Ball State the lead right after Scott's goal but had her shot just deflected over the top. BSU also had a breakaway chance whistled back for an offsides call.
The Cardinals really ramped up their attack after falling behind in the 52nd minute on a goal from Appalachian State's Maggie Hanusak. From the point forward, Ball State held an 8-2 advantage in shot attempts over the Mountaineers (0-2-1).
BSU continued pressing hard into the final minutes of overtime. The Appalachian State keeper made a nice play to bat away a late free kick from Paula Guerrero, and Alessandra Fistrovich narrowly missed out on a game-winner in the final 60 seconds.
"I was very pleased with the way we ended the game," Roberts said. "It was a very strong performance from Paula in the middle, being consistent. I felt our center backs and outside backs were much improved today."
Tristin Stuteville made the start in goal and came up with a pair of critical stops in the opening minutes of the game when Appalachian State came out attack-minded. She stopped close-range shots from Hanusek and Erin Settle to keep the Mountaineers off the board early, and she went on to make four saves on the day.
Scott came off the bench Sunday and provided a real spark. She entered late in the first half and went on to lead the team with four total shots, including the all-important goal to tie things up. That goal prevented the Cardinals from suffering a rare home loss. Ball State is now 17-0-4 at the Briner Sports Complex dating back to the beginning of the 2015 season.
"Obviously, the influence of Emily Scott when she came in was just impactful," Roberts said. "It was great to see her score that goal. She deserved it.
"This team has great character. Right now we just need to make sure we keep on believing in what we do. This is a talented group of girls, and I think they know they have something special. We just need to keep working at it."
Ball State will now head back on the road, traveling to the state of Texas next weekend. The Cardinals will play a pair of Big 12 opponents, squaring off Friday night with TCU and Sunday afternoon with Baylor.
