Soccer Posts Win, Draw as Spring Continues
April 08, 2017 | Soccer
MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State soccer team continued its spring schedule Saturday at the Briner Sports Complex with a win over Grace College and a draw against reigning NAIA national champion Northwestern Ohio.
Â
The Cardinals started the day against Northwestern Ohio, a team that went 23-2-1 on the way to its championship in the fall. The teams held each other scoreless in a defensive battle.
Â
"Northwestern Ohio was a very credible team for us to play against," Ball State coach Craig Roberts said. "We did face a little bit of adversity this week with one or two injuries we sustained, so we had to make several adjustments. We fared well throughout the game had several opportunities to score. It was a very competitive game, and I felt we grew out of the experience in all areas."
Â
Ball State then exploded offensively in its second game of the afternoon en route to a 5-0 shutout victory over Grace College.
Â
Lauren Lerew, Kenzi Gooley, Emily Scott and Sam Kambol tallied goals in the win. The Cardinals' final score of the day came on an own goal.
Â
"It was a very comfortable performance," Roberts said. "We were a lot more productive with the system we were playing. Our intensity and attitude were very composed and consistent.
Â
"I'm very pleased with the progress we're marking. We still have details we have to take care of. But overall the pieces are coming together in preparation for next season."
Â
Ball State will conclude its spring schedule Saturday, April 22 when it hosts the Puerto Rico Women's National Team at 1 p.m. at the Briner Sports Complex.
