Wilmes No-Hitter Highlights Softball’s Friday Sweep of Toledo
April 21, 2017 | Softball
MUNCIE, Ind. – Junior pitcher Carolyn Wilmes (Evansville, Ind./Matre Dei) marked one more item off her career to-do list Friday afternoon by throwing her first career no-hitter to help the Ball State softball team sweep a Mid-American Conference doubleheader over Toledo by scores of 2-1 and 9-4 at the Softball Field at First Merchants Ballpark Complex.
In leading the Cardinals (29-20; 13-4 MAC) to a 2-1 victory over the Rockets (20-30; 8-9 MAC) in Friday's opener, Wilmes became the first Ball State pitcher to throw a no-hitter since Elizabeth Milian blanked Buffalo in a 7-0 victory May 12, 2010 in the MAC Tournament.
Wilmes, who improved to 13-9 on the year, allowed just one unearned run in Friday's win over the Rockets while striking out four batters. She has been one of the most dominating pitchers in the MAC over the last month-and-a-half, earning an 11-1 record in her last 16 appearances. She has a 1.74 ERA over 72.1 innings of work in the run, and has stuck out 74 batters including a career-high 10 in last Saturday's nightcap versus Eastern Michigan.
Friday's opening game victory also marked the 50th career win for Ball State head coach Megan Ciolli Bartlett who finished the day with a 51-52 career record, including a 21-20 ledger in MAC play.
Offensively, the Cardinals wasted little time jumping onto the scoreboard in Friday's opener, as freshman left fielder Haley Dominique (Oregon, Ohio/Clay) blasted a 2-1 pitch over the fence in right-center field for her first career home run.
Unfortunately, the Cardinals could not capitalize on bases loaded chances in both the first and second innings after Dominique's blast, keeping the game close at 1-0.
Looking to gain a little steam, Toledo used a hit batter and a one-out Ball State throwing error to push its lone run of the game across the plate in the top of the third to tie the score at 1-1.
However, Wilmes buckled down from there, retiring 10 of the next 11 batters she faced to keep the score even going into the bottom of the sixth.
Dominique, who finished the game 2-for-2 with a pair of walks, drew her second walk of the day to open the bottom of the sixth which proved to be critical for the Cardinals. With sophomore pitch runner Aeshia Miles (Lawrenceville, Ga./Collins Hill) entered at first, junior second baseman Maddy Labrador (Lexington, S.C. / Spartanburg Methodist) blasted a RBI double into right field to plate the speedy Miles for what proved to be the game-winning run.
Toledo would threaten in the bottom of the inning, as a pair of hit batters managed to find their way to second and third with two outs. However, Wilmes would shut the door by catching Showalter swinging for the game's final out.
After a pitcher's duel in the opener, the Cardinals found themselves trailing 3-0 after the top of the first in Friday's nightcap.
Ball State would not remain scoreless for long, however, as freshman right fielder Kennedy Wynn (New Albany, Ind./New Albany) came through with a two-out, bases loaded RBI single in the bottom of the inning to cut the Rockets' lead to 3-1. Labrador scored on the play after collecting a one-out single and advancing to third on back-to-back two-out walks to freshman third baseman Janae Hogg (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) and sophomore designated player Madison Lee (Cerritos, Calif./Cerritos).
After a scoreless second inning, Ball State put a four-spot on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third to take a 5-3 advantage. The four-run rally started with back-to-back one-out singles by Lee and Wynn. King followed with a three-run blast to right-center field for her sixth home run of the season.
Junior shortstop Brittany Hopper (Scottsdale, Ariz./Phoenix College) and sophomore catcher Olivia Huffman (Woodbury, Minn./South Dakota) kept the rally alive with back-to-back singles, while another Dominique walk loaded the bases. Labrador then drove in the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly.
Ball State extended its lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the fourth on Wynn's second RBI hit of the game, a one-out single up the middle. Freshman pinch runner Tara Morey (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) scored on the play after replacing Hogg who opened the inning with a double.
After Toledo battled for a run in the top of the sixth, the Cardinals put the game out of reach in the bottom of the frame with three more runs. Hogg reached base on an error to start the rally, while Lee followed with a single to right field. After the second out, a walk to King loaded the bases.
Junior pinch hitter Cadie O'Donnell (Salina, Kan./Barton C.C.) showed her speed in the next at bat, legging out an infield single on a grounder to third to drive in the first run of the inning. Senior pinch hitter Amanda Arnett (Monroe, Mich./Monroe) followed with a two-run single up the middle to drive in the final two runs of the game and make the score 9-4.
Freshman Darcie Huber (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield Central) would earn the win in the circle for the Cardinals, improving to 9-6 on the year after holding Toledo to just four hits and three runs over the first 3.0 innings of the game. She also struck out a pair of batters.
Freshman pitcher Alyssa Rothwell (Ashville, Ohio/Teays Valley) threw the final 4.0 innings for the Cardinals, picking up her third save of the season by limiting the Rockets to two hits and one run. She also struck out four batters, including getting the Toledo batter on a check swing for the final out of the game.
Ball State and Toledo will close their three-game series Saturday with a scheduled 1 p.m. first pitch at the Softball Field at First Merchants Ballpark Complex. After the conclusion of the contest, the Cardinals will honor seniors Amanda Arnett and Rachel Houck (Greenfield, Ind./Louisville).
