December 21, 2017 | Women's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State women's basketball team made history after its 93-81 victory over Western Kentucky (8-4) Thursday night in Worthen Arena. With the win, the Cardinals finished their non-conference season with an 11-0 ledger for the first time ever.
The last time any Ball State basketball team has completed non-conference action with a perfect record was the men's basketball program in 1988-89. The Cardinals will also be the only school to enter Mid-American Conference action undefeated, which hasn't happened in over a decade.
The Cardinals had six players reach double figures tonight with senior forward Moriah Monaco leading the way with 24 points. Senior forward Destiny Washington finished the game with 15 points and nine rebounds. Freshmen guard Maliah Howard-Bass and forward Oshlynn Brown both had 12 points apiece. Junior guard Carmen Grande had her second-straight double-double after scoring 11 points, while dishing out 12 assists. Junior guard Jasmin Samz rounded out the double-digit scoring with 11 points.
Ball State continues to shoot well from the field after a 50 percent performance while holding Western Kentucky to 38.9 percent from the floor.
The game was a tight affair at the start as both teams went back-and-forth up until the 2:39 mark. After that, the Cardinals began to pull away from the Lady Toppers. Monaco made an impact during the Cardinals 14-7 run, knocking down two 3-point baskets, helping Ball State on their way to a 28-21 advantage heading into the second frame.
Western Kentucky made a run to start the second period to make it a 28-27 ball game, but the Cardinals opened the game up with a 3-point basket from Howard-Bass. Ball State went on an 18-12 run to finish the second quarter and would take a 46-38 lead over Western Kentucky at intermission.
In the first half, the Cardinals relied on their shooting from behind the arc (43.8 percent) along with their defense for the first and second quarters. Ball State managed to hold the Lady Toppers' top scorer Tashia Brown (22.9 ppg) to only five points in the first half. Monaco led all players at halftime with 16 points.
The Cardinals came out strong in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Toppers 29-19 while shooting 50 percent from the field. Ball State would take a commanding 75-57 lead over Western Kentucky heading into the last frame.
The final period was all Ball State, cruising to an 86-66 lead over Western Kentucky with 4:26 left in the game. The Cardinals went onto win the game by 93 points which marked the seventh time this season Ball State had reached 80-plus points.
The Ball State women's basketball team will begin Mid-American Conference action after the holiday break on Dec. 30 against west division rival Central Michigan. The game is set to begin at 2 p.m. in Worthen Arena.
