December 10, 2017 | Women's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. - The undefeated Cardinals had all 12 players score in today's historic 126-55 win over Oakland City Sunday afternoon in Worthen Arena.
With the win, Ball State moved to 9-0 for the season while Oakland City fell to 2-6. Ball State set a new Worthen Arena and program record for most points scored in a single-game with the Cardinals 126 point performance. The old record was 106 against Taylor in 1975 and 105 in Worthen Arena versus Bowling Green in 1999.
For the game, Ball State had seven players reach double figures, freshman forward Oshlynn Brown led the Cardinals offensively with a season best 17 points while adding nine rebounds. Junior guard Nakeya Penny also registered a personal high 16-point performance. Freshman guard Maliah Howard-Bass finished the game with 15 points off of 6-of-12 shooting from the field. Senior forward Destiny Washington had 14 points while teammate junior guard Jasmin Samz chipped in 13 points and senior guard Frannie Frazier rounded out the double digit scoring with 12.
Ball State was assertive on the glass pulling down 62 rebounds, which ties the program record for second most rebounds in a single-game. The last time the Cardinals achieved that goal was in 1979 against IUPUI. Seventy-four points came from the Cardinals bench today. The Cardinals also scored 60 points in the paint.
Ball State opened the game with a 28-0 run that lasted up until the 4:30 mark. The Cardinals starting five provided the offensive spark and then the bench continued, allowing the Cardinals to pull away early for a 39-17 first quarter lead.
Oakland City found some rhythm from the 3-point line in the second stanza, but Ball State continued to outpace them, as the teams went into the half with the Cardinals leading 56-22. Frazier led Ball State with 12 points and Howard-Bass finished the half with 10.
In the second half, the Cardinals continued their fast-paced offense, outscoring the Mighty Oaks 33-to-9. Ball State also played strong defensively, holding Oakland City scoreless until the 6:25 mark of the third quarter.
At the start of the final frame, Penny hit a 3-point basket for the Cardinals 100th point. Shortly thereafter, the Cardinals made history with a layup from Brown at the 6:07 mark which made it a 108-45 ball game.
The Ball State women's basketball team will return to Worthen Arena for the remainder of non-conference action. The Cardinals will host Austin Peay (Dec. 18/11 a.m.) and Western Kentucky (Dec. 21/7 p.m.).
