Monaco Scores 21 Points As WBB Downs Missouri State, 70-58

MUNCIE, Ind. - Senior forward Moriah Monaco led all scorers with 21 points in Ball State's 70-58 win over Missouri State Monday night in Worthen Arena.
Junior guard Carmen Grande had a double-double after scoring 11 points and dishing out 10 assists. Senior guard Frannie Frazier also enjoyed a strong showing in tonight's contest. Frazier ended the night with 11 points off of 4-of-6 shooting from the field.
With the win, Ball State begins its season 2-0 for the second straight year under sixth year head coach Brady Sallee. Today's game was Missouri State's season opener and marked the first meeting between the two schools.
The Cardinals played tight defense during the first quarter, holding Missouri State to only four points over a five minute stretch. Senior forward Destiny Washington jumped out to quick start after rattling off eight straight points for the Cardinals. After that, Ball State put together a 9-4 run to take a 17-8 advantage over the Lady Bears into the second stanza.
Ball State continued to control the contest over Missouri State in the second period. The Cardinals built their largest lead of the half (33-16) with 2:15 left on the clock which came off of a jumper from junior guard Jasmin Samz. The Lady Bears struggled offensively and were held to 28.6 percent shooting (4-of-14) from the floor. The Cardinals shot 46.2 percent from the field and took a 33-19 advantage over the Lady Bears into intermission.
The third quarter was a different story as Missouri State's offense started to heat up, scoring 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting (53.8 percent) from the field. The Lady Bears cut the Cardinals once 17 point lead down to eight (47-39) with 1:43 on the clock. A free throw from Washington and a layup from Samz ended the quarter with Ball State up by 11 (50-39).
After a 3-pointer by Missouri State, which made the score 50-42 with 9:33 left in the game, Ball State bounced back with an 8-2 run over the next four minutes of play. Some key baskets from Monaco and Grande allowed the Cardinals to keep their composure and not give up. After that, Ball State would never look back and would cruise through the remainder of the quarter to win its second game of the season.
