WBB Downs University of Illinois Springfield 92-42 In Exhibition
November 01, 2017 | Women's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. -The Ball State women's basketball team is officially back, showing off a more up-tempo game plan than in previous years. Ball State dominated the University of Illinois Springfield, 92-42, in their preseason exhibition game Wednesday night in Worthen Arena.
Despite a lot of new faces on the team this season, the Cardinals controlled the game from the beginning, pushing the ball up the court quickly at all times and getting easy baskets in transition.Â
Three players scored in double figures, with Destiny Washington leading the way with a double-double, finishing with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Preseason All-Mid-American Conference selection Moriah Monaco would end the night with a 17-point performance while newcomer Jasmin Samz chipped in 15 points off of 5-of-7 shooting from the field. Carmen Grande dished out 12 assists and led the way with two blocks.
Ball State shot 52.2 percent from the field, compared to just 27.3 percent for Illinois Springfield. The Cardinals also won the rebound battle, 42-35. Unsurprisingly, the Cardinals dominated the points in the paint category, 50-23.
The Cardinals made use of both their freshmen and newcomers in tonight's contest, the early 23-3 edge in the first quarter allowed sixth year head women's basketball coach Brady Sallee to give the bench some playing time.Â
Ball State officially opens the 2017-18 season on the road at Cleveland State Nov. 11 at 1 p.m. After that, the Cardinals return to Worthen Arena Nov. 13 for their home opener against Missouri State at 7 p.m.
