Lucy Walton scores goal, Alyssa Heintschel breaks school record for wins
OXFORD, Ohio -- Lucy Walton scored early Thursday afternoon, and the Ball State soccer team closed out the regular season with a 1-0 victory at Miami.
Â
Alyssa Heintschel kept a clean sheet to become the winningest goalkeeper in Ball State history. The senior from Oregon, Ohio, recorded the 35th win of her career, breaking a tie she held with Rachael Murphy (2005-08) for the top spot on the all-time list.
Â
The Cardinals will be the No. 2 seed for the Mid-American Conference Tournament and will host a quarterfinal game Sunday at 1 p.m. against Northern Illinois. Kent State defeated Ohio on Thursday to lock up the regular season championship and the No. 1 seed.
Â
"It was a very consistent performance," Ball State coach Craig Roberts said. "I thought it was a steady game all the way through. Obviously, Alyssa did great to get another shutout and break the school record, which we're really proud of. We didn't create an excessive amount of plays, but the ones we did threatened the goal. It was just a good effort all the way through."
Â
Walton, who scored the game-winner last season against Miami, did it again Thursday. Her goal in the 17th minute was all the Cardinals (10-6-3, 8-1-2 MAC) needed. Julia Elvbo and Amanda Shaw had shots turned away after a free kick into the box, and Walton was there to hammer home the second rebound.
Â
Ball State controlled the action most of the way, generating 19 shots and five corner kicks to nine shots and one corner for Miami (2-14-1, 2-7-1 MAC).
Â
The one Miami corner came late in the game and looked threatening, but Heintschel came out to punch it away and keep the RedHawks off the scoreboard. She also finished with three saves in the game.
Â
Ball State saw its streak of consecutive MAC regular season championships come to an end, falling one point short of Kent State in the overall standings. The Cardinals, who had already locked up their third straight West Division title, reached the 10-win mark Thursday for the fifth straight year.
