Soccer Pulls Away for 3-0 Win over Eastern Michigan
October 13, 2017 | Soccer
Cardinals get goals from Amanda Shaw, Alessandra Fistrovich, Emily Scott
MUNCIE, Ind. -- After having the nation's longest active home unbeaten streak snapped last week, the Ball State soccer team was ready to begin a new one.
Â
And it didn't take the Cardinals long to get started.
Â
Junior forward Amanda Shaw scored in the second minute Friday, and Ball State got better as the game went along en route to a 3-0 victory over Eastern Michigan at the Briner Sports Complex.
Â
Alessandra Fistrovich and Emily Scott added second-half goals as the Cardinals (7-6-2, 5-1-1 MAC) stayed atop the Mid-American Conference West Division standings.
Â
Shaw knocked in a corner kick from Allison Abbe to put Ball State on top from the outset. And Abbe had a shot deflect off the crossbar just minutes later. But head coach Craig Roberts wasn't thoroughly pleased with the rest of the first-half performance.
Â
He credited freshman Greer Glover with sparking the Cardinals as a sub late in the half.
Â
"I felt it was a really slow start for us, and we needed to be better," Roberts said. "I think the game really started to change when Greer Glover went in. She showed a lot of dedication and commitment for the team, and I think that was an inspiration for the other players. It was a much better second-half performance."
Â
The first insurance goal came from Fistrovich in the 73rd minute. The sophomore midfielder took a throw-in from Scott, turned and fired over EMU keeper Kaylin Williams and into the top of the net.
Â
It was Scott's turn 10 minutes later when the junior mid ripped a shot from just outside the 18-yard box. It deflected off the post and into the net to give the Cardinals an insurmountable 3-0 lead.
Â
"Each of the goals was outstanding," Roberts said. "It just shows the versatility of this team that we can score from right, left, center, on set pieces. We took care of the ball a lot better in the second half and produced more opportunities, which we converted."
Â
As it turns out, the one goal would have been enough. The Ball State back line stifled the attack for Eastern Michigan (5-10-1, 2-5-0 MAC), allowing just two shots the entire game. Senior goalkeeper Tristin Stuteville patrolled the net and posted a clean sheet.
Â
Ball State improved its home record to 5-1-1 this season and 21-1-4 over the past three years.
Â
The Cardinals will close out their regular season home schedule Sunday against their final West Division opponent of the year. BSU will host Central Michigan for a 2 p.m. kickoff at the Briner Sports Complex.
