Julia Elvbo scores again as Cardinals extend unbeaten streak to five games
MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State soccer team moved into first place in the Mid-American Conference standings with a 1-0 victory Sunday in a showdown with Kent State at the Briner Sports Complex.
Sophomore midfielder Julia Elvbo scored her third goal of the weekend and fourth in four conference contests, as the Cardinals snapped the Golden Flashes' seven-game unbeaten streak.
Ball State (5-5-2, 3-0-1 MAC) extended its own unbeaten streak to five games, dating back to the non-conference finale. The Cardinals took over sole possession of the top spot in the MAC standings through two weekends of league play.
Elvbo, who scored twice in Friday's victory over Ohio, netted Sunday's only goal in the 35th minute. Yela Ziswiler fired a shot that was blocked, but Elvbo was there to clean it up. She beat Kent State keeper Ashleah McDonald to stake the Cardinals' to a 1-0 lead.
"Julia was amazing this weekend," Ball State coach Craig Roberts said. "To score three goals in a weekend is a tremendous feat. I'm really excited for her. She's just getting better and better all the time."
Kent State (7-4-1, 3-1-0 MAC) created some chances in the first half but was unable to score. Ball State senior keeper Alyssa Heintschel made five first-half saves, including a pair of diving stops, to keep the Golden Flashes off the scoreboard.
The Cardinals did a better job of controlling the action in the second half, limiting Kent State to just one shot on goal over the final 45 minutes. Ball State stayed in attack mode with the lead, registering nine total shots and four on goal after the break.
"We weren't reading the game very well (in the first half)," Roberts said. "We weren't stepping at the right times. We needed to be a little more tactically astute, and I felt the girls made the adjustments we talked about at halftime exceptionally well. I thought we really controlled the second half."
Perhaps Kent State's best chance for an equalizer came in the final minute of the game when Ball State was whistled for a foul just outside the 18-yard box. Vital Kats lined up the free kick but sent it wide of the far post, and the Cardinals kept possession as the clock ticked down.
Evie Stepaniak led Ball State for the day with four shots from her position on the back line. She and Elvbo both put a pair of shots on goal.
The Cardinals are in the midst of a stretch that will see them play five out of six games at home. The only road game in that span comes Thursday with a visit to Western Michigan. BSU will then return home for a Sunday matchup with Northern Illinois.
