Divers Compete in 2016 Miami Open
December 08, 2016 | Women's Swimming and Diving
OXFORD, Ohio – The Ball State women's diving team competed in the 2016 Miami Open last weekend. This unique event is one that invites competitors from all over the world to dive against one another.
Freshman Rachel Bertram, sophomore Courtney McKeen and freshman Rachel Smallwood all made the cut after the 1-meter prelims. In the finals, Bertram placed seventh with a score of 247.85, McKeen finished in 12th with a final score of 230.40, and Smallwood posted a 222.60 for 16th.
"The ladies had some really great dives and some strong performances this weekend," diving coach Nick Gayes said. "Courtney McKeen dived particularly well and is starting to see the pieces come together."
Smallwood and Bertram both made it to the finals in the 3-meter event. Smallwood's score of 273.45 in the prelims was a season best. In the final round, Bertram tallied a season best of 267.50 to place eighth. Smallwood finished ninth with a score of 267.15.
"I thought Bertram did an incredible job of rallying from a near-failed dive in 3-meter prelims to not only make finals, but to move up quite a bit and execute some really nice dives," Gayes said.
The Ball State women's swimming and diving team will return to action Friday, January 6, when they travel to Indianapolis, Ind. to take on IUPUI and Xavier, as well as divers from Ohio State.
