Award honors college football players who serve others, celebrate their positive impact on society and inspire greater service in the world
ATLANTA – Ball State football's Brandon Martin was chosen to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List announced prior to the start of fall camp. Martin was one of 115 players recognized from college football's Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), and it is his second time on the watch list after being placed on it prior to the 2021 season.
A member of the National College Football Awards Association, the Wuerffel Trophy is presented annually to the FBS player who best combines exemplary community service with leadership achievement on and off the field. It is the first major award honoring the character of service to others.
Semifinalists for the award will be announced on Nov. 1, and finalists will be announced on Nov. 22. The formal announcement of the 2022 recipient is scheduled to be made on Dec. 8, and the presentation of the 2022 Wuerffel Trophy will occur on Feb. 24, 2023.
Martin enters his seventh season with the Ball State program in 2022. The Indianapolis, Ind. native was named the 2020 MAC Defensive Player of the Year - the first BSU player to earn the honor since punter Brad Maynard in 1996 and the Cardinals' first traditional defensive player to win the award since linebacker Greg Garnica did it three straight years from 1987-89.
In addition, Martin was a semifinalist for the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year a season ago through his leadership, service and commitment.
Martin and the Cardinals kick off the 2022 season at Tennessee, Sept. 1. The home opener vs. Western Michigan is slated for a 2 p.m. ET kick on Sept. 10 at Scheumann Stadium.
