December 06, 2022 | Women's Volleyball
LEXINGTON, Ky. - - For the second-straight season, the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) honored a pair of Ball State women's volleyball players, with senior middle Marie Plitt earning All-Midwest Region honors and sophomore setter Megan Wielonski garnering All-Midwest Region Honorable Mention accolades.
The pair helped guide the Cardinals to a 24-9 overall record, a second-consecutive Mid-American Conference (MAC) regular season championship, and an at-large bid into the 2022 NCAA Women's Volleyball Championship.
Plitt, an AVCA All-Midwest Region honorable mention last season, led the MAC and is currently ranked 15th nationally with a .404 attack percentage. She is the first player in program history to finish a season hitting above .400 and the first player in the league to do so since 2016. The mark includes a program record .833 (15-0-18) effort in the sweep of Arkansas State (Sept. 9). Overall, Plitt hit .300-or-better in 25 of BSU's 33 matches.
A 2022 First Team All-MAC selection, Plitt led the Ball State attack with 337 total kills. In addition, the first of her 10 kills in BSU's NCAA Championship first-round match at 16th-ranked and fourth-seeded Marquette last Thursday (Dec. 1) made her the 13th player in program history to reach 1,000 career kills. She smashed double-digit kills in 18 matches this season, including a season-high 17 in the four-set win at Ohio (Nov. 12).
Plitt was also a key player at the net for the Cardinals, ranking second on the squad with a 0.67 blocks-per-set average. The 2022 MAC All-Tournament Team selection registered 84 total blocks, including a team-best 22 solo blocks. She also served up 11 aces and collected 96 total digs.
Wielonski, an AVCA All-Region selection a year ago, had another brilliant season running the Ball State offense, with the squad currently ranked 42nd nationally with a .250 team attack percentage. She handed out a league-best 1,359 total assists, with the total currently fourth among all NCAA Division I setters.
The 2022 MAC Setter of the Year and First Team All-MAC honoree, Wielonski is also ranked 21st nationally at 10.79 assists per set. But the four-time MAC West Division Setter of the Week's impact was not just felt on offense, as she ranked second on the squad with 391 total digs for a 3.10 digs-per-set average.
Wielonski collected 21 total assist/dig double-doubles on the year, including registering 28 assists and 10 digs in BSU's NCAA Championship contest against the Golden Eagles. She also earned status as one of the nation's top servers, currently ranked 55th in the country with 46 service aces.
